Hayley 247 Engineering Services moves up a gear through the acquisition of Lamond & Murray

Hayley 247 Engineering Services is proud to announce the acquisition of Fife based company Lamond & Murray Ltd (L&M). The deal was completed on the 4th June 2019 and will see Lamond & Murray as specialist facility operation to Hayley 247.

Hayley 247 has seen an unprecedented level of investment. The acquisition of Lamond & Murray follows shortly after the purchase of Drive Management Services in December 2018. This forms part of a wider strategy to enhance service provision within the group.

Lamond & Murray was formed in 1921 by Charles Lamond & Walter Murray to manufacture haulages or winding equipment for the nearby mining industry.

The company was involved in the "war effort” from 1939-1945 and made equipment for elevating heavy artillery.

By the end of the war the demand for haulages was dwindling and the company began to specialise in gear manufacture and soon became established as one of Scotland's leading sub-contract gear makers.

Since the mid 1960's investment in new machinery has been the key to development, notably the purchase of a Sunderland G250 in 1981, increasing capacity of spur, helical and double helical gears to 2.5 metres in diameter, and in 2004, the installation of a Gleason Pfauter P1200 profile gear grinding machine, allowing for the first time, the manufacture of ground gears. Since 2000, other CNC lathes and gear machines have been added or updated on a regular program. Over this period the factory and offices have been extended on four occasions culminating in the building of a 300 square meter extension in 2004, to house the new profile gear grinder.

The latest and most significant addition to Lamond & Murrays impressive capacity was the purchase of a Gleason Pfauter 1600 profile gear grinding machine which was commissioned in August 2018.

The facilities have also been used for gearbox refurbishment since 1995 and more recently for the manufacture of special purpose gear boxes up to 8 tonnes in weight.

The company has 40 employees, ranging from engineers of many years service and experience to the most recent apprentices.

Lamond & Murray has four directors. Alastair Lamond, Iain Lamond, Stephen Clarke & Thomas Lapsley.

Alastair will continue as Managing Director, Iain as Sales Director, Stephen as the Technical Director and Thomas as the Operations Director.

They are supported by experienced office staff and production engineers, involved in accounts, administration, CNC programming, purchasing and planning, as well as the production of working drawings, many of which are reverse engineered.

L&M is seen as a natural extension to mechanical engineering services provider Hayley 247, who specialise in everything from industrial gearbox repair, general mechanical repairs, CNC machining to custom fabrication. The acquisition will enable Hayley 247 to enhance its offer to their clients and those serviced via Hayley Group’s 50 strong branch network.

We are delighted to have Lamond & Murray and all the team of Directors onboard with us. We will now be working closely with each other to develop and improve our service offering to all of the Hayley Group and Dexis Europe. This feels like a natural progression for both parties.

The deal will enable Hayley 247 to repair, manufacture and condition & oil monitor all types and all sizes of industrial gearboxes, with strong engineering divisions working in tandem I’m confident we can drive our unique service offering forward.
